Almost all we know of Thomas Brooks, we know from his own writings. After several years at sea, presumably as a chaplain in the English navy, Brooks took up the pen following the conclusion of the first English Civil War. He was largely silenced by the Act of Uniformity in 1662, which forced the resignation of many Puritans and reformers.

You’ll find this quote and many others in 1,500 Quotations for Preachers, with Slides. If you’d like to hear more of what Brooks had to say, Logos offers his complete works.
