10 Worship Songs about Trusting God in Hard Times

woman singing a worship song about trusting God in hard times

Some years ago, Carl Trueman asked a question churches today are reckoning with: What can miserable Christians sing?1

In the midst of a pandemic, people in your services are likely struggling with fear, anxiety, grief, and uncertainty. We can’t know what the future will hold, but we know this: our hope in Christ is secure.

Songs are one of the Church’s most powerful tools to reinforce the truth of the gospel during difficult times. They make truth ‘portable’—meaning, people rarely remember word-for-word quotes from sermons, but they often know every word of some songs.

To help you equip your people to suffer with joy (James 1:2), here are 10 worship songs about trusting God you can use in the coming weeks.

Worship songs for steadfastness in trials

1. ‘It Is Well with My Soul’ by Horatio Spafford and Philip Bliss

When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like the sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
‘It is well with my soul.’

2. ‘He Will Hold Me Fast’ by Ada Habershon and Matt Merker

When I fear my faith will fail
Christ will hold me fast
When the tempter would prevail
He will hold me fast
I could never keep my hold
Through life’s fearful path
For my love is often cold
He must hold me fast.

3. ‘Raise a Hallelujah’ by Jonathan David Helser, Melissa Helser, Molly Skaggs, Raquel Vega

I raise a hallelujah, with everything inside of me
I raise a hallelujah, I will watch the darkness flee
I raise a hallelujah, in the middle of the mystery
I raise a hallelujah, fear you lost your hold on me

Chisholm and William Runyan

Great is thy faithfulness
Great is thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see
And all I have needed thy hand hath provided
Great is thy faithfulness
Lord unto me

Worship songs for being honest with God

5. ‘Lord from Sorrows Deep I Call’ by Matt Boswell and Matt Papa

Storms within my troubled soul
Questions without answers
On my faith these billows roll
God, be now my shelter
Why are you cast down my soul?
Hope in Him who saves you
When the fires have all grown cold
Cause this heart to praise You!

6. ‘I Will Wait for You (Psalm 130)’ by Keith and Kristyn Getty

Out of the depths I cry to you
In darkest places I will call
Incline your ear to me anew
And hear my cry for mercy, Lord

7. ‘Lord, I Need You’ by Christy Nockels, Daniel Carson, Jesse Reeves, Kristian Stanfill, Matt Maher

Lord, I come, I confess
Bowing here I find my rest
Without You I fall apart
You’re the One that guides my heart

Worship songs for setting hopes on eternity

8. ‘Is He Worthy?’ by Andrew Peterson and Ben Shive

Do you feel the world is broken? We do
Do you feel the shadows deepen? We do
But do you know that all the dark won’t stop
The light from getting through? We do
Do you wish that you could see it all made new?
We do

9. ‘We Will Feast in the House of Zion’ by Sandra McCracken and Joshua Moore

We will not be burned by the fire
He is the Lord our God
We are not consumed, by the flood
Upheld, protected, gathered up

10. ‘Way Maker’ by Osinachi Kalu Okoro Egbu

Waymaker
Miracle Worker
Promise Keeper
Light in the darkness
My God
That is who You are
